Hydrocortisone for skin: a steroid medicine for treating eczema, psoriasis and insect bites

Steroid tablets

Do not apply hydrocortisone at the same time as other creams or ointments such as a moisturiser. Wait at least 10 minutes between using hydrocortisone and any other product. Try to use different skin products at different times of the day. However, urticaria can occur in a severe allergic reaction called anaphylaxis (see below).

• If you have urticaria, without the symptoms of anaphylaxis, visit your GP if your symptoms don’t go away within 48 hours.

• The longer you’ve been using a treatment, the longer you should take to wean yourself off it — don’t simply stop overnight when you’ve been applying a topical steroid for a year, consult a medical professional first.
• By this point I couldn’t sleep in a bed and had to sleep sat up on a stool so that only my bum was touching something.
• If you have been using hydrocortisone for a long time, your doctor may tell you to gradually reduce the amount you use before stopping completely.

Whether you’re treating eczema or another inflamed skin condition like atopic dermatitis, using topical steroids is a common and often safe way to treat symptoms when they flare up.
